"Best Dam Run" - Held Annually in Early May
Each year nearly 300 runners from the Hartwell, Ga., and Anderson, S.C., communities line up at the Hartwell Dam for the Annual "Best Dam Run". Held in partnership with the Corps of Engineers, the Hart County Running Club and the Hart County Chamber of Commerce, the event gives adults and children an opportunity to run 5-kilometer, 10-kilometer, or 1-mile routes along Hartwell Lake's scenic landscape.

"The Best Dam Run is always a successful event at Hartwell Lake," said Zach Harkness, natural resources program manager, Hartwell Dam and Lake. "The Corps of Engineers coordinates landuse, parking, traffic control and prepping parks for the crowd, but at the same time we get to work with other community groups to encourage outdoor recreation and exercise."

Come and enjoy the "Best Dam Run Anywhere." Sponsored by the Hart County Running Club & the Hart County Chamber of Commerce. Contact the Hart Chamber at (706) 376-8590 for more information or register online at http://www.active.com/running/hartwell-ga/33rd-annual-lake-hartwell-dam-run-5k10k1-mile-2011.

RACE COURSE

This is great off-road running experience. The course is beautiful and offers something for every runner truly wishing to ´ditch the city´. Nestled in the woods of Northeast Ga lies a true gem. Well groomed system of trails and beautiful scenery will leave you breathless (if that doesn´t, the 6.2 or 3.1 will). Once you descend into the woods, you will forget you´re in the city. As a matter of fact, you will come to know why we follow the creed ´Ditch the City´.

GPS unit measures course at 5.89 miles; Calibrated Bicycle Computer "wheel" measures course at 6.13 miles. Please note GPS Units do not capture every twist and turn in the woods as bicycle wheel does roll every twist and turn. This course and venue is one you won´t want to miss (very scenic and worth the drive)! Entire trail is about 4-5 feet wide ⁄ running surface is smooth (minimal rocks and roots) but very hilly (you will be working up or down hill with some recovery spots in between)! We will start the trail run in the "lower parking lot" (registration and packet pick-up will take place in the "upper parking lot" at the finish line). The race will start in the street (to allow for spacing) and quickly turn left onto a narrow asphalt path around a pond, over a small bridge and then sharp right turn up a hill running next to the golf course). Everyone (10K⁄5K) will start out following the "orange blazes" (markings on the trees)... at mile 1.2 the 5K runners will stay straight and follow the orange blazes around the course... 10K runners will turn hard right and cross the street (1st water station) and will then follow the "purple blazes" (markings on the trees) this section of the course will be part of an "out ⁄ back" (imagine a stem and lollipop) stay on the stem for 1 mile (this is the "out" section) at mile 2.2 you will stay right and follow that loop (lollipop section) around and back to the stem you will be at 3.5 miles on the "back" section when you get to 4.5 miles (2nd water station) road crossing you will turn hard right after you cross the road and get back onto the orange section of the trail – follow oranges blazes back to the road next to a small pond up the hill and finish at the pavilion!
