Lake Hartwell is the venue for numerous tournaments each year including the
2008 Bassmaster Classic which is to launch from
Portman Marina Feb 24-28,
2008.
One of the most visited COE lakes in the country, Hartwell still gets
relatively little fishing pressure. Lake Hartwell's upper end lies in the
foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and the lower end in rolling planes.
Hartwell runs as deep as 204 feet at full pool elevation of 660'. Most of
the shoreline is unspoiled and heavily wooded even though the area is well
developed. During construction of the dam, the standing timber along the
shores was removed, but trees in the main body of the lake were flooded. The
result is a giant underwater forest between 10 and 100 feet deep which
provides lots of cover.
